RedNeck Yacht Club Florida
Drinking and driving and reckless behavior – all caught on camera.
Two years after NBC2 Investigators exposed dangers at the Redneck Yacht Club, we went back to see if anything has changed.
A stabbing launched the Redneck Yacht Club back into the headlines just a few months ago.
Since then, we spent two separate weekends inside to see whether things are out of control or just fun and games.
It’s a park for ATVs, trucks and swamp buggies.
Some weekends the Redneck Yacht Club is fit for families. Other weekends, it’s unsuitable for kids.
A bigger crowd means a wilder scene. After the mud races and truck pulls wind down, the party heats up.
A few watch the bands, but the real show is off stage with dirty dancing, exposed skin and heavy drinking - even behind the wheel.
“When you have large crowds of people and throw alcohol into the mix, inevitably you’re going to have some disorder, ” said Lt. Mike Casarella with the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office.
A private security force is up against thousand and is on the run all night as security responds to fight after fight. They lead troublemakers away in handcuffs, and try to enforce rules that some blatantly ignore.
We asked if driving under the influence was illegal on private property.
“It is illegal anywhere in the state, ” said Lt. Casarella.
In addition to private security, the park hires off-duty deputies to issue citations at the front of the park and paramedics to treat any injuries.
“Think we’ve gotten very good at dealing with the types of calls we have out there. Now that we are experienced with the Redneck Yacht Club, ” said Marianne Taylor, public safety director.
The weekend we were there, Charlotte County deputies and emergency crews responded to 29 calls at the Redneck Yacht Club for things such as drugs, trespassing and assault.
Deputies made two arrests.
“Obviously, we’re not comfortable with what happens out there, and that’s why we’ve taken steps to try to improve the situation, ” said Lt. Casarella.
The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office boosted it’s presence at the park after a February stabbing. Now, a gap of uniformed deputies head inside to patrol events and come up with ways park management can improve safety.
Park security already searches vehicles and requires waivers at the park’s entry. Deputies suggest they add wristbands to identify children’s ages.
But law enforcement says it can only do so much.
“To go into that event and enforce DUI would be extremely manpower intensive and beyond our capabilities, ” said Lt. Casarella.
